Easier Rivers (class I-II)

Easier Rivers

Rio Grande Bosque:

Algadones to Corrales - This section of the Rio Grande Bosque is the most overlooked recreational opportunity in Albuquerque.  The perception is often that the Rio Grande is "too low" to kayak, but from Algadones to Corrales, the river is much narrower, and a lot deeper than it is closer to the heart of Albuquerque.  This section can be paddled year around and is great for full-moon trips, or a beginner's first river trip.  The Coronado Campground in Benralillo also has a great access point, parking and restrooms.  From Algadones to Coronado is about 5 miles.  From Coronado to Corrales North Beach is about 4 miles.  This 9 mile stretch has 3 easy Class I rapids.

Corrales to Alameda - The section from Corrales to Alameda is a scenic 9 miles stretch.  The river is much wider, and a bit more shallow in the miles before Alameda bridge.  With enough water, this is a great way to view the world-famous Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, as the balloons typically launch from Balloon Fiesta Park (on Alameda) and fly north along the river.
Alameda to Central

Rio Grande below Elephant Butte:

Elephant Butte to Caballo Reservoir - This is one of my favorite flatwater stretches of the Rio Grande.  The water flows clear and clean out of the bottom of Elephant Butte dam, and remains mostly clear for the entire 18 miles to Caballo Reservoir.  From Paseo del Rio Campground (just below the dam) to Williamsburg is about 5 miles, and includes two small class II rapids in the town of Truth or Consequences.  From Williamsburg to Caballo Reservior is another 13 miles, and includes one small class I rapid.  A great trip for beginners, anglers or kayak camping (pending reservations with the BLM)
