About Us

Kayaking has taken me places roads and trails don't go. Teaching has introduced me to some of my best friends, and rivers have taught me lessons that only nature and experiences can teach. It's been a goal of mine, since the very beginning, to share these experiences with you. Along the way, I've certified adventure racing teams for Primal Quest, Eco-Challenge and Beast of the East, developed paddling programs for law enforcement officers, scouts and people with disabilities. I've seen relationships start in class and continue years down the road, and helped dozens of people find new and used boats that they truly love to paddle.

Since moving to Albuquerque in May 2005, I've taught, literally, hundreds of people how to kayak. The number of referrals and limited pool time indicated a need for more formal classes on a regular basis, where groups of students could progress from one beginner class, on to the next as long as they wish to continue learning.  In the Fall of 2008, New Mexico Kayak Instruction, Inc. was formed to meet those needs.

In the coming weeks, I'll be completing this site one phase at a time. The first phase is to update the calendar of events, enabling you to view and register for the classes and trips that most interest you. The second phase is to complete the store, where you'll find the latest kayaks and gear from Jackson, Liquid Logic, Prijon, Native Watercraft, Kokatat, Seals & IR Skirts, Predator & Shred Ready helmets, AT & Werner Paddles, NRS, Thule & Sport Rack and others. Ultimately, members of this site will receive advanced notice of discounts and closeouts available only here at NMKI. The final phase of the site is a local community, where paddlers can meet on- and off-line, form organic paddling groups, plan trips, sell used gear, etc.

It's been my pleasure to teach, and paddle with so many great students, and I look forward to the thousands more to come! Seeing someone roll for the first time, or overcome the fear of their first class II, III or IV rapid, or seeing new friendships form on the river is a very real and tangible experience. There's no place I'd rather be, than in New Mexico, teaching you to kayak!
