4 Week Kids Clinic (ages 9 - 13)
New Mexico Kayak Instruction is pleased to offer the first official, 4-week open-to-the-public kids kayak class in Albuquerque for kids 9 - 13 years old. This 4-week series will include 12 hours of pool instruction covering basic strokes and concepts to effortless paddling, fun skills-building games including Ultimate Kayak Frisbee, Indoor Slalom and Kayak Polo. The last week will wrap up with an introduction to the kayak roll1.
Upon completion of this course, most kids should be competent kayaking on flat water, such as Cochiti Lake or easy rivers such as the Rio Grande Bosque.
The 4-week series will take place on the following dates2:
- January 29th, 4 - 7pm, at Los Altos Pool
- February 12th, 4 - 7pm, at Los Altos Pool
- February 26th, 4 - 7pm, at Los Altos Pool
- March 11th, 4 - 7pm, at Los Altos Pool
An optional trip on the Rio Grande Bosque may be offered at the end of this course.
1 The kayak roll will be taught at the instructor's discretion based on each individual child's comfort and proficiency in a skirted kayak, as well as their ability to follow directions and overall comfort level being upside down in the water.
2 One free make-up session will be offered in conjunction with our regular 2nd or 4th Wednesday 'Kayak Pool Party' at Los Altos Pool, on Wednesday nights from 8 - 10pm
Full payment is due at the time of registration, and is non-refundable. Full payment is required to reserve your spot in this event. No spot is reserved untill full payment is received.
New Mexico Kayak Instruction accepts cash, check or credit cards over the phone.
CANCELLATION POLICY
Your payment is a reservation for an event with limited capacity. Cancellations or rescheduling request 4 or more days before the scheduled event are entitled to receive a refund, less a 30% cancellation fee. We're sorry, but cancellations or no-shows within 3 days of the event are non-refundable, and may not be transferred to another date. You may transfer or resell this ticket to another interested party. They should, however, complete this RSVP form and understand the cancellation policy.
I was excited to take the pool class, even though a few friends ridiculed taking a kayak class ("What's so hard about kayaking?!"). The whitewater clinic presented challenges I was not expecting (physically, mentally or emotionally), and it heightened my awareness of the river, the sport, challenges and myself. It has taken me a week to process this experience, and I welcome the time it will take to continue to process both the instruction and personal learned experience. This course was positively intense!
Kelly has a way of transferring his passion for kayaking to everyone who attends a talk, lesson or paddles with him. A very patient and conscientious instructor, I always feel safe during lessons on and off the river. Not only does Kelly teach the sport, he finds ways to help you find your niche and meet others who share the same interest. In addition, the other instructors he brings along are equally as knowledgeable and helpful. If you haven't tried kayaking or want to hone your skills, this is a great place to start.
