Start Time:

This class is offered in conjunction with UNM's Health Science Center and The Autism Programs to allow young adults, 16 years old and over, to participate in a 6wk kayak instruction program. Not only will these individuals and their caregivers and peers learn to kayak, they'll also work on balance and agility skills, eye/hand coordination, social and team-building skills and will help them prepare for outdoor adventures with their families and caregivers.

The price for each student is $75 for the whole 6wk training. A "student" is defined as anyone in a kayak, participating in the kayak. Caregivers and peers, families and support staff are not charged if they assist the student changing clothes, entering or exiting the kayak or pool, swimming alongside of the student throughout class, etc. It is our hope that students and their caregivers and peers can go kayaking after class, so we hope that family members and caregivers will also participate as students in the class and develop equally strong paddling skills.

The entire 6 week curriculum is as follows:

  • Week 1 - Feb. 19 (Saturday 9-11am)
  • Week 2 - Feb. 26 (Saturday 9-11am)
  • Week 3 - Mar. 12 (Saturday 9-11am)
  • Week 4 - Mar. 26 (Saturday 9-11am)
  • Week 5 - Apr. 9 (Saturday 9-11am)
  • Week 6 - Apr. 23 (Saturday 9-11am)

Requirements to participate include:

  • Must be willing to submerge head and face underwater
  • Must be willing to enter the water independently
  • Must be able to physically stand upright in the pool
  • Must be able to walk, swim or propel self forward
  • Must be able to bring someone to keep you safe in the water and assist before and after class in the dressing rooms

My history with water has been very negative.  When I was a kid, I almost drowned.  Since then, I've found myself avoiding situations where I felt vulnerable to dangerous waters.  Since my courses with Kelly, I have gained both confidence and necessary knowledge that allows me to finally enjoy the water again.  Never would I have thought I would be going down class III whitewater rapids on a boogie board.  Thank you Kelly.  You have peaked my interest in taking more whitewater courses.
