This month, the proceeds from this event - and any donations - will go to the following charities:
2nd Wednesday - Muscular Dystrophy Association "ABQ Fall Lockup"

4th Wednesday - Cystic Fibrosis Foundation - New Mexico Chapter

Here's how it works:

  1. Come join us on the 2nd & 4th Wednesday.
  2. BYOB (Bring your own boat) or rent one from New Mexico Kayak Instruction for $5
  3. Make a donation, if so inclined
  4. Have fun playing Ultimate Kayak Frisbee (see below)
  5. Proceeds after pool rental and any donations will be given to each cause above.

Ultimate Frisbee is played competitively all around. Come join us for a unique twist to this fun game; Ultimate Kayak Frisbee. Not only does one have to accurately throw the Frisbee, one's teammate also has to catch it without flipping over! Participants are divided into two teams, each defending their own goal, and pressing toward the opponent's goal by passing the Frisbee downfield. A goal is scored when the Frisbee is caught behind the opponents goal-line, which is typically between two points.

Not only is this a great way to build your skills, it's also a great way to meet your teammates and other people to paddle with.

Why RSVPs are so important....
The pools are expensive to rent, and this time New Mexico Kayak Instruction covers the pool rental as a community service to local paddlers. RSVPs are needed to ensure we have a minimum number of people to cover the pool rental fees, and to limit enrollment so that the pool does not become over-crowded. Also, by RSVP'ing, we are able to communicate via email about last-minute changes, which often include cancellation due to lightening, or other pool closures.

  • If you RSVP for yourself and/or a guest (ie - you reserve a spot), and no-show, you will receive a Pay-Pal request for the pool rental fee ($8); this balance must be paid in full before your RSVP will be accepted for the next pool party
  • If you request a boat and/or any gear, and cancel after the gear has been loaded (typically 3hrs in advance), you will receive a Pay-Pal request for the gear ($5); this balance must be paid in full before your RSVP will be accepted for the next pool party
  • If you show up and have not RSVP'd, (ie -you have not reserved a spot), you may be asked to return another time if the maximum number of paddlers has been reached (typically 30) at Los Altos Pool. If there is additional space, or someone has no-showed, you'll be admitted after 8:15.

Please RSVP, and keep it current.

I took the Intro to Kayaking (level 1) class and it was GREAT. I'd actually done a lot of different types of kayaking (touring, sea, whitewater), but had never gotten any formal instruction. Wow, what a difference a few hours makes. I learned a lot of technique that I had been lacking. Kelly is a great instructor and I was impressed with how efficiently the class was put together. He is passionate about enabling people to participate in the sport that he loves. Definitely recommend this class to anyone interested in learning to kayak!

I have to say, Kelly covered EVERYTHING!  I've taken this weekend class twice to absorb everything that goes into whitewater kayaking.  Since my class, I've paddled on class III whitewater and felt like I had a great sense of what [maneuvers, compound strokes or techniques] to do, when to do it, how to do it, and why to do it!   What Kelly teaches would be pretty much impossible for a self-taught paddler to figure out alone.  I feel safer, and more confident each time I'm on the river with a foundation of strokes and concepts to practice outside of class, and most importantly, I feel in control on the water.
