Late Spring Round Up
Figure 1 Cactus in Bloom
Mother’s Day signifies that spring has sprung and that we are starting to get into the full swing ok kayak instruction. With that being said, New Mexico Kayak Instruction was pleased to have volunteered at the Annual Mother’s Days Race, and Rio Grande River Festival, held in Pilar, and the Embudo Race held this past weekend in Dixon, New Mexico. NMKI staff held a race line preview of the “race course” on Friday May 6, and had two staff members participate in the annual race. Corey Spoores raced in the long boat division, and M.J. Lee raced in the short boat division of the downriver race. M.J. also participated in the Slalom event. Both Spoores and Lee placed in the top 3 spots in their respected events.

Meanwhile the Embudo Race drew class 5 boaters from as far away as Maine, and Quebec. NMKI staffers, and several additonal non racers assisted in race safety in the infamous Slots, a class 5 section of the Embudo.
Interest has never been this high in learning to whitewater kayak, and we want to teach everyone we can. With that being said NMKI is pleased to announce a new course offering called the Whitewater Progression Course.

The Whitewater Progression Course is a course designed to go from little or no skill level to beginner whitewater paddling in as little as 6 classes or 34 hours of instruction. During the rapid progression course your learning environment will start in the pool or fresh water pond. As you progress you will transition to the Rio Grande Bosque, then to the Rio Grande in Taos.
These river trips will be punctuated by additional skills clinics during this 6 day course. You will be introduced to two separate skills clinics, where we will work on our paddle strokes, boat balance, and learning the eskimo roll.
Not quite sure a group setting is right for you? We do private instruction as well.
Are you already experienced at whitewater kayaking? Do you have you own boat and gear?
Are you a seasoned beginner or an intermediate kayaker? Give us a call and we can
design a class that fits your needs.
